I recently conducted an unofficial poll on the Etsy forums. I asked people what they would like to have a drawing of, if they were to commission one. One of the most popular answers was: my pet.
I haven't really made a serious attempt to draw animals before, but it seems like I need to learn! So with Mother's Day coming up, I decided to draw a picture of my mom's fur child, Flopper The Ginormous Rabbit.
As you can see, he is aptly named in both ginormousness and floppyness. I used two photos for my drawing: one photo of Flopper, and another photo I found on Google of the same breed of rabbit. I chose it because of the nice lighting.
Getting the fur right was a bit of a challenge at first, because it's not the same as human hair. There was also a lot of foreshadowing in this photograph, so I had to make the fur look like it was laying smoothly against the rabbit's back. Eventually I found that repeatedly drawing the fur, blurring it, partially erasing it, and drawing it in again did the trick. Here is the finished product. My Mom seemed pretty happy with it, and I guess it's not bad for my first try!
I'm working on more animal drawings so that I can add a pet listing to my Etsy shop!
He is so gorgeous and the fur is purrrrfect! But now I know why he doesn't look exactly like Flopper...the stunt double has an extra dewlap, which means its probably a doe. Doh!
