The abandoned factory

Lately I've been interested in industrial styles. So I put together this treasury, inspired by the now-defunct twine factory in my hometown.

If you don't know what industrial means, it means a lot of rusted metal, bare lightbulbs, weathered old carts, burlap fabrics, giant metal letters and vintage glass bottles. It's kind of rough and spartan, sure, but I guess I like the masculine, urban edge to it. I'm sure that a lot of interior designers out there are "so over" the trendy cart coffee tables and tripod floor lamps, but I still think it's awesome.

Wallpaper that doesn't suck

The later half of the 20th century was a dark, dark time for wallpaper. I think many of us have memories of busy floral wallpaper in the ubiquitous 80's shades of forest green and dusty rose. (barf)

Or hideous, yellowing wallpaper from the 50's:

So I think it's awesome that wallpaper is making a comeback with fresh, modern designs. I've recently discovered the brand Pottock, which I like because their designs are kind of illustrator-y and funny too:

How cute is this whale wallpaper in the bathroom?!

This design, called "dead trees" is definitely weird and not particularly pc. But I kinda like it. Maybe it's just because it's purple, though.

Alas, I live in an apartment and can't paint or wallpaper my walls right now. Sad. So I've got my eye on this "tapestry" from Urban Outfitters. It would be a great way to add some color to an apartment:

Like a winter cabin

Woodburned Daily Reminder by rcm619 - $58

I guess it's the chilly winter weather - and, being Californian, by "chilly" I mean "60 degrees" - but lately I've been drawn to rustic things. So here's a collection of forest-y, winter-y, cabin-y things from Etsy.

Woodland Edge Wallscape by The Bent Tree Gallery- $175

8x8 Farmhouse photo by felicitycrew - $21

Root Table by realwoodworks1 - $195

Wool Felted Acorn ornaments by greenbaboondesigns - $15

Clay antler mobile by ARTISANIEeurope- $345

Natural white birch wood coasters by urbanplusforest - $24

And because I am cold and hungry, I'm going to throw this into the blog post as well:

Baby Cinnamon Roll Soap by soapopotamus - $8

Yes, it's SOAP. Soap! I don't know whether to feel amazed or disappointed right now.

Does your home need an embroidered seallama?

I've been inspired lately by some of the wonderful embroidered hoop art I've been seeing on Etsy. I wanted to make one of my own. At first I was going to embroider a skyline pattern, like I've seen in Moxiedoll's shop, but then I thought - why copy someone else's idea?

So I decided to go with a seallama - a mythical animal my husband is very fond of (and I'm 99% sure he made up.) I bought all the materials for $5 at Joann's Fabrics. Next I sketched some seallamas on paper.

Once I had a llama I liked, I drew it on the fabric with a white charcoal pencil. Then I embroidered it, using the pencil marks as a guide. I used white thread for the top half and light blue for the tail. When it was finished, I superglued the ends of the fabric to the back of the hoop, so it will all stay in place.

The whole project took me about an hour. Now the seallama, that beloved symbol of dignity and hospitality, greets all visitors who enter our home.

Chive vases

Chive is a company that specializes in unique and funky flower vases. I love the playful, futuristic feel that their products have.

The vases are totally affordable, too. This square-shaped one above is $10!

These guys, "koski," are my favorites, because 1.) they look like river rocks 2.) they look like something from the set of Star Trek. Either they would be aliens or maybe a hippie alien's collection of medical instruments. I think a group of them gathered on tabletop would look really cool, especially if your home had a hippie alien theme.

Revolt against boring wall art

If there's one thing that bugs me in this world, it's "decorative art." By that, I mean a certain type of art you tend to find in hotels and waiting rooms, art meant to fill an empty space in the wall and nothing more. It's the visual equivalent of muzak: meant to blend into the background, generic, unobtrusive, vague enough to be inoffensive to everybody. Stuff like this:

Sure, there's some decorative art that's not so bad. But if you want to decorate the walls of your home, seriously, don't visit the home decor aisle of Target or Kohl's when you get can some really unique, fantastic art on Etsy. Of course, a custom pencil portrait is always a great conversation piece. Hint hint. Here's some of my favorite wall art from the endlessly fascinating world of Etsy.

Personalized Little Flower Hearts by sarahandbendrix - $72
Veronika is based in the UK, and creates these customizable heart pieces in various sizes, materials and colors. They come framed, too!

Polka Dot Owls art print by boygirlparty - $20
Susie has a unique and instantly recognizable style. I've been following her work for several years!

Bouquet by Genine - $30
I have been a huge fan of Genine's bird watercolors ever since I discovered Etsy. They are colorful, cheerful and sophisticated.

Hand Embroidered Beetle Bug by Moxiedoll - $55
Moxiedoll's embroidered hoops and fun and playful. Instead of the traditional cottages and flowers, she embroiders things like VW Beetles, Polaroid cameras and cassette tapes.

Stacey's block prints have a graphic, rustic feel to them. I love how they look all grouped together like this.

Let there be Light by PragyaK - $70
Pragya's artwork is super bright and happy. I think it would be perfect for a children's room or any room that needs a pop of color. (Sorry, I know that phrase is totally cliche, but it just works, ok?)

Demeter and Persephone by stephaniemartinart - $120
If you're looking for something more traditional, Santa Cruz-based Stephanie sells original etchings and oil paintings that have beautiful color and texture.

Love to Read by bunnydee - $25
Hailing from San Francisco, Danielle's drawings are hilarious (in a good way) because she finds a way to work a little rabbit into almost every piece. Her style is quirky and cute with some pop and 1960's influences.

While original art can be expensive, there are many Etsians who sell prints that are comparable in price to what you might find at big-box stores. So while a print is only "handmade" in a very loose sense, you still have the opportunity to buy directly from an artist, and decorate using artworks that have style, humor, and a story behind them.

So I could go on forever about all the amazing stuff on Etsy. In fact, I've spent way too much time on this blog post already. Hope you guys are happy. Do you have a favorite from among the above pieces?

Feathering the Lovenest

Ever since I was a little girl, I've had a fascination with pretty chandeliers. I guess it's because they have a sort of fairy tale palace quality to them. This chandelier is way too elaborate for my little apartment right now, but you know...one day. Here are some other handmade things I picked out to decorate my dream home. Usually I like things that are simple, with clean lines, bright colors, and just a little something different about them.

I recently wrote on Facebook that "asking a wife not to buy decorative pillows is like asking her not to breathe." My friend Doug, who is soon to be married, seemed annoyed by this idea. I told him to get used to it.

This would be great on our couch, which is usually the first thing guests see when they walk into our apartment. Although I really enjoy supporting artists on Etsy, I'm thinking about making this pillow myself in order to save a little money.

I would put fake birds in here, then I would hang it from the ceiling, then true, lasting happiness would finally be mine.

This vase is beautifully and simply designed. And I like red things. It would look beautiful with a bunch of white baby's breath flowers in it.

Because my husband loves squirrels.

These vintage lamps remind me of something from my grandma's house. Maybe because she's also from the mid century.
